What's New At AntelBio

For Immediate Release

Parachek® is the first USDA approved Johne’s disease test for bovine milk

February 13, 2007

Prionics, a world leader in farm animal diagnostics, and Antel BioSystems, Inc. have received United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval for the extension of use of the Parachek® test for diagnosis of Johne’s disease in bovine milk samples. It is the first ELISA kit approved by the USDA for testing bovine milk. Parachek®, the original Johne’s ELISA kit, is widely used for the detection of antibodies to Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in serum of cattle, sheep and goats.

As a part of their collaboration, Antel BioSystems, Inc. (AntelBio) and Prionics submitted data to USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics last fall to obtain the dual claim for Prionics’ Parachek® kit. With the added USDA claim, Prionics and AntelBio sought to have milk testing officially acknowledged in the U.S. Voluntary Johne’s Control Program. The integration of milk testing in state and nationally-funded Johne’s programs will have an immediate and positive impact on the level of participation of milk producers. These programs have been designed to address the growing concern about Johne’s disease.

The Parachek® milk test will enable dairy producers to use milk samples -- routinely collected as part of the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) system -- for Johne’s diagnosis. Since these milk samples are already collected on a regular basis for nearly half the dairy producers in the U.S. and Canada, the cost and inconvenience of sample collection and shipping associated with serum testing is eliminated. The potential to integrate herd health data into DHI could also significantly enhance the ability to track and manage Johne’s disease.
